Since 2004, Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) has been willing to bring its world class conservation and restoration capabilities to the fore and provide a long-term solution for the entire 100-acre lake/wetland.
2004 Letter submitted to USFWS, WDFW and CWS decision makers.
"We, the owners of the Canadian side of Judson Lake, believe that this lake must be ecologically restored. We have asked Ducks Unlimited if they would be willing to get involved and devise a strategy to assist in the recovery and maintenance of the ecological integrity of our shared lake. We could all partner together to help create something beautiful that future generations will marvel at, while taking clear steps toward the goal of eliminating the significant mortalities of wintering swans. Because the portion of Judson Lake that is on our property is much smaller than the U.S. side, we could use it to investigate remediation techniques which may be an option, and create the model for restoring the entire lake."
NO REPLY from any agency.
In fact, it was DUC Regional Manager Dan Buffett who, at the time, explained to the wildlife managers how to create the effective exclusion area on the US side that has removed the mass die-offs from our annual news cycles these past years. We are extremely thankful to Dan for all his help and advice over the years!
PUBLICLY, THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE, CANADIAN WILDLIFE SERVICE, AND WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE HAVE COMMITTED TO A LONG-TERM SOLUTION INCLUDING DUC
"Judson Lake has also been part of a broader discussion regarding its stressed ecological condition; hence, this roost site is an obvious candidate for long-term restoration. Environment Canada – Canadian Wildlife Service, BC Ministry of Environment, and Ducks Unlimited Canada have agreed to consider the ecological condition of the lake, and develop options to address long-term habitat management goals at the lake… ( Joint Swan Lead Poisoning Information Sheet 2008-2009 Progress Report)".
PRIVATELY, DUC HAS NEVER BEEN AUTHORIZED TO DRAW A RESTORATION DESIGN FOR JUDSON LAKETake Action →
